scaling upcycling into everyday workwear

overview

Flash Coffee partnered with The New Factory to develop upcycled aprons for all Flash Coffee stores across Indonesia. Designed as part of their operational uniform, the aprons embed sustainability directly into daily store activities. By using upcycled textile waste, this collaboration transforms production leftovers into functional workwear—making circular practices visible, practical, and scalable across a national retail network.

challenge

Producing aprons for stores nationwide required a high level of consistency in quality, durability, and comfort. The challenge was to standardize a product made from upcycled textile waste materials that naturally vary in color, texture, and availability while still meeting Flash Coffee’s brand standards and operational needs for everyday use.

solution

The New Factory implemented a structured production system, from material selection to quality control, to ensure each apron met consistent functional and visual standards. The design focused on durability, ease of movement, and brand alignment, proving that upcycled materials can be transformed into reliable, professional workwear at scale.

Through this collaboration, textile waste that would otherwise be discarded was transformed into functional aprons worn daily by baristas across Flash Coffee stores in Indonesia.

By embedding upcycled products into standard operational uniforms, sustainability became part of everyday work routines rather than a one-time initiative.

The project reduced the need for newly produced materials while proving that upcycled textiles can meet the durability and quality required for high-frequency, professional use.
