Upcycled Plastic Bag Workshop

overview

In collaboration with Hutanika and Ngadaur, The New Factory hosted an upcycling workshop focused on transforming discarded plastic bags into functional sling bag. This initiative aimed to make circular practices more approachable by giving participants a hands-on experience in turning everyday waste into something useful. Through this collaboration, we brought together communities, creativity, and environmental awareness in one shared learning space.

challenge

Plastic bags are often seen as low-value waste and are difficult to recycle through traditional systems. Many participants also had limited knowledge about proper and safe techniques for handling and repurposing plastic waste. The challenge was to shift mindsets, introduce practical upcycling methods, and show that even the most common household waste can gain new purpose through simple, accessible processes.

solution

Together with Hutanika and Ngadaur, The New Factory designed a workshop that guided participants through sorting, layering, fusing, and crafting plastic bags into durable tote bags. Using minimal tools and beginner-friendly techniques, the session empowered attendees to create their own upcycled products while understanding the impact of creative reuse. The collaboration strengthened community engagement and showcased how collective action can turn small waste materials into meaningful, long-lasting items.

Plastic bags are one of the most common forms of household waste used briefly, yet lasting for decades in the environment.

By teaching simple upcycling methods, this workshop showed that sustainability doesn’t always require complex systems or expensive tools.
